July ScrapBlocks Instructions and Tutorial
Step 1: Choose Your Photos to Print
Step 2: Order your Photo Squares or Print Them Yourself
If you’re not sure how, watch a video here to learn how easy it is to upload your photos, add words (if you want), and get those photo fabric blocks ordered!
You will need three 4×4 (plus seam allowances) photo fabric squares.
BEST VALUE: If you would like to order a fat quarter of 4×4 photo squares you can go here! You can get 20 photo squares for $35! Now that’s a deal!
If you would like to order them individually, you can do that here. You can order 1 or you can order 10+. It’s up to you!
3. Optional: Create Plastic Templates to Center and Cut Photo Quilt Blocks.
I use this plastic template material for so many things! It can be cut with your Brother Scan n Cut and makes amazing templates. You can get EZ Quilting Template Plastic on Amazon here!
To keep the template from sliding around, I spray the back of the template with Grippy! This is also perfect for all your quilting rulers! I just don’t have the hand strength to hold my rulers in place. When I try, my fingers start swelling and then that’s a real problem! This has saved my life!
You can get Grippy Spray here on Amazon!
Now you have perfectly centered and sized Photo Quilt Blocks!
Step 4: Cut Out Your Tag Fabric
You will cut out your photo fabric square to be 4 1/2 x 4 1/2. You ordered a 4×4 block. We automatically add the seam allowances!
Step 5: Sew Your Tag Block Together
Make sure not to place your iron directly on your photo blocks. You can just cover your photo block with any scrap of cotton fabric and protect it that way!
Step 6: Cut Tag to Shape
This is a super simple step!
Step 7: Sew Tag Front to Tag Back
Step 8: Turn Your Tag Right Side Out and Topstitch
You are going to make three of these tags for this ScrapBlock layout. You can make the tags all the same fabric or all different. My layout has three different fabric tags!
Step 9: Cut Out and Sew the Base of Your ScrapBlock
You can use any type of fabric for your base. It really depends what you are using your ScrapBlock for! I am going to use some denim on mine, because I am going to make a mini wall quilt or pillow cover.
Step 10: Attach Your Photo Tags to Your ScrapBlock Base
Step 11: Embellish Your ScrapBlock
Here is the sample again with sample embellishments!
Step 12: Make a Project From Your ScrapBlock!
This ScrapBlock can be made into many projects!
- Make a pillow front from the ScrapBlock – This block’s finished size is 20×20. Perfect for a pillow cover. Ikea has the perfect 20X20 FEATHER PILLOW INSERTS that are so affordable!
- Make a mini quilt to hang on your wall – wall space gets limited but this size is perfect for small spaces around the house, dorm decor, and office wall space.
- Tote bag front – this little design is perfect for a totebag! Just cut a back the same size, stitch some handles at the top and you are ready to go!
- The possibilities are endless! Make sure and comment or send me photos of your ideas when you have them completed!
